What do college counselors and advisors do?

A parent recently related a wonderful story about explaining the benefit of private college counseling services. When he said he had to leave the gym early to meet with his son's college counselor, his friend said to him, "you know there are counselors in high schools that do that for free right?" After he described to his friend what his son's private college counselor does, his friend asked for my business card. One of my greatest joys in life is being able to provide individual college counseling and advising services to students and their parents. In my early career when I worked for schools and colleges, I enjoyed my work but could only provide the services permitted by my employers which were generally related to their institutional missions. Now I can provide what each student needs without regard to any particular college. I love working with a variety of students and their families and helping them make the post-secondary plan that is right for them. Seeing them gain admission to colleges and universities and other post-secondary programs is the most rewarding thing I've ever done. |
