Something that has been a mystery to me has been why some students want to apply to colleges that will pose an extreme challenge to them should they be admitted. Recently, I found the answer. In casual conversation, I was talking about academics at college to maintain scholarships and the ability to continue to attend a college. The student exclaimed: "you mean they don't just let you stay when you get in? I explained to her that during each term in college, a student is sort of auditioning to return the next term.
That conversation was not an isolated example. The very next week a young man was surprised as well. So now I make sure all students are aware that getting in is just the beginning and that you have to perform academically well enough to get to continue in college to graduation.
