Getting an acceptance notification from a college is exciting and feels like the end of a process. It is the end of applying...and the beginning of accepting the acceptance, paying a non-refundable deposit, choosing a dorm and roomies, signing up for orientation and other related tasks. It is critical that students accept an admissions offer by posted deadlines. Otherwise, the offer may not be honored.
An additional task that students sometimes forget is alerting the other colleges under consideration that the student has accepted an offer from another college. This allows other colleges that have made an offer to the student to extend that offer to a student on a waiting list.
A sign of excellent college acceptance etiquette is promptly alerting colleges the student will not attend as soon as an admission offer has been accepted at another college. This allows the college to send good news to a student on a waiting list while there is still time for them to react in a timely manner.
