If you ask high school seniors what they are afraid of right now, they'll tell you they are afraid they won't get in to their #1 college. If you ask their parents what they are afraid of, they'll tell you that college sticker prices make them afraid they will spend their entire retirement savings educating their kids. What I fear in the college landscape is students entering the wrong colleges, getting into the wrong majors and dropping out.
In the best scenario, college is a safe place full of opportunity for a high school graduate to become highly skilled in an area that suits them so that they can pursue a successful career. This is the time of year that statistics are in the news about salaries and jobs. Don't be tempted to pressure your kid into majoring in something just because of the salary or because you think they will be sure to get a job if they will only enter that field.
Every high school senior has a specific set of talents and skills that suits the student for a specific set of careers. College will be more of a treat for your kid if you help your kid determine the careers that match his talents and find the colleges that are best suited to help him grow in those areas.
