Getting ready for essay season

College admission essay season begins August 1st when most colleges in the US release their essay question topics. The best essays are written by students who practice writing and who edit, edit and edit again before hitting the "send" button on their electronic college admission applications.

The following 2012-14 Common Application essay option is a great question to use for practice because it asks students to think about their unique story. Although not all colleges use the Common Application, many ask a similar question on admission applications.

Common Application Essay Option:Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

The best way for students to prepare an answer to this question is for them to arrange to be interviewed by a friend and ask the friend what story they hear. They can incorporate their friend's impression into the story they share in the essay.
